Steve Crawford
Named VP Of ISCF!

Steve Crawford

Many here know that when it comes to responsibility beyond ISCF President Steve Fossum (L) and the in house ISCF staff, Steve Crawford's (Right) name comes to mind. Crawford has worked with the ISCF since 2003 and year by year has become a more important part of the organization from fresh ideas to the growth of the ISCF itself. During that time he has went from an associated trainer and promoter to right hand man to Fossum. With so much effort on his part to grow the ISCF as well as the sport of MMA itself, it comes as no big surprise that earlier today, ISCF President Steve Fossum appointed Crawford as the new Vice President of the ISCF.

This is Crawford's second VP appointment associated with the parent company International Fight Sports (IFS). - www.IFfightSports.com - IFC President and CEO Steve Fossum appointed Crawford last year to Vice President of the newly formed International Battle League - IBL - www.IBLFights.com - an MMA team fight league Crawford helped develope with Fossum.

Crawford's duties and responsibilities will pretty much stay the same. The obvious change will be in his role with the ISCF in making important decisions. Over the years Fossum has be getting more and more busy with the growth of the ISCF and this past year, the other top organization under the IFS the International Kickboxing Federation, IKF - www.IKFKickboxing.com has also shown strong growth both here in north America and in Europe and Asia.

Crawford's most recent work was in organizing the new ISCF Grappling Division with Fossum. The new division of the ISCF will provide yet another platform for up and coming martial artists to test their skills as grapplers, sanctioned by the ISCF organization.

Crawford's titles are many. Along with being a proud father and husband who shares his passion for MMA with wife Patty, (Who is also an ISCF Certified Official) he is the owner and operator of Crawfords MMA. www.crawfordsmma.com

However, his work does not stop there and neither do his titles. He is the Chief Inspector of MMA for the Kansas Boxing Commission as well as being the chief ISCF Certification Instructor for all ISCF certified officials worldwide. The Founder of American Jujitsu and 7th Dan has an impressive resume to go along with his work in the ISCF. For those wondering what VP Crawford has accomplished, take some time to read below.

"This was an easy decision for me and the ISCF as a whole." Said Fossum. "Steve's work ethic and dedication to MMA, not to mention his passion for everything about the sport makes this a good move for everyone associated with the ISCF. He's a leader we are all proud to be associated with."

Kyle Maynard to Fight in MMA?
Publicity STUNT Or Real DESIRE?

Is Kyle Maynard's desire to fight in a real MMA fight a true passion and desire to fulfill a dream, or a publicity stunt drummed up by rogue promote David Oblas to get publicity? Whatever his motive, Oblas as well as Maynard have been getting TV interviews and more for Oblas' upcoming Alabama event. Oblas desire is to try and make a name for himself as a top MMA Promoter may be a worthless effort though. Those in the MMA Fight World know his past, and being on top as a "Credible" Promoter is a long way off. Oblas always has an angle, or a motive to his madness. One thing is for sure... Oblas and Maynard are getting a lot of press with this decision, but when it's all said and done, will it be good for the greater good of the sport or, as is many times before, just Oblas's pocket book?

SPECIAL TO ISCF: Fighting in his first mixed martial arts event is a dream come true for Kyle Maynard. But for MMA and the state of Alabama, it's a potential nightmare.

Maynard, a congenital amputee who was born with no elbows or knees, is scheduled to make his amateur MMA debut Saturday night at an event at the Auburn Covered Arena. The fight is shrouded in controversy, with critics claiming Maynard's entry demonstrates a serious need for an athletics regulatory body in Alabama and that it also exposes the dark side of MMA, where greedy promoters cut corners and care little about potentially serious injuries to fighters.

"This could do a lot of damage to the sport and hurt a lot of people," said J.J. Cornell, whose Casca-Grossa apparel company has sponsored numerous fighters, including Maynard as a grappler and MMA light heavyweight champ Forrest Griffin. "I hate it for Kyle, because I respect ... him and what he's accomplished, but this (fight) looks like a scheme to sell tickets. There are a lot of people who are (ticked off) about this going down."

The controversy surrounding the fight has reached such a level that the event's organizer, Maynard's promoter David Oblas, (Left - who was suspended as a Promoter by the ISCF back on May 10th, 2005 for Failure to Comply with Mandatory ISCF Sanctioning Requirements - Basically Cutting Corners.) is refusing to reveal the name of Maynard's opponent out of fear that the fighter will be pressured into backing out.

All Oblas would reveal is that the opponent is from Wisconsin and has competed in two prior MMA fights. The debate over Maynard largely centers around one issue: whether he is a legitimate contender or the too-trusting victim of a rogue promoter. Many in the MMA community -- from fans to fighters to officials in the sport -- believe Maynard's disability, which has left him with arms that end at the elbow and legs that end well above the knee, limit his ability to protect his head from direct blows. MMA fighters kick and punch -- both while standing and when on the ground -- and use a variety of martial arts and grappling techniques to incapacitate an opponent or force submission. Critics see no way that Maynard won't end up severely beaten and possibly seriously injured, which would result in negative publicity for a sport that has made strides in recent years to shed its barbaric image

Results From Valley Fight League & Combat in the Cage's
"3rd Offense"
April 11th, 2009 - Leesburg, Virginia, USA

The 17th Mixed Martial Arts event for Promoter Lionell Royer was a joint venture provided by Squared Circle Promotions and Combat in the Cage Incorporated with Promoters Lionell Royer and Ed Shu respectively. This was a fantastic show from start to finish! Squared Circle Promotions and Combat in the Cage had met in New Jersey several months ago, and decided to join forces to provide the residents of Leesburg, Virginia with an exciting experience of Mixed Martial Arts. The event was recorded for TV production and internet viewing. The tele-commentators from Philadelphia, PA were Promoter Ed Shu and co-commentator and MMA fighter, Kasheem Peterson. This is the second time that Kasheem has graced us with his presence. He provides a unique flavor and excitement to the show.

Not only is Ed Shu one of the promoters of this event, he also performed the function of Ring Announcer. The DJ was Illah. He set the tone to kick off the event and kept the spectators and fighters motivated with some great music until the final bell rang!! Irvin Barb brought a great audio system with him and it sounded great! Thanks Illah and Irvin!

Judges, Regan Thompson, Mike Moler, and Maxine Locklear-Thomas, had their hands full with this event. The fights were extremely well matched. In the instances where a decision had to be rendered, they were extremely close in their scoring with unanimous decisions on each bout. Referee Gary Crim kept the action moving and ensured that safety was top priority. There were no major injuries in the cage! Ring Physicians, Dr. Sandra Winiewicz did a magnificent job getting all of the fighters' examinations completed prior to the event and was attentive to the fighters when needed by referee Crim.

Finally, the staff of the Douglas Community Center did a magnificent job getting the Community Center prepared for this event, Thanks ;-) ! Well - it's time to reveal the results of this action packed event, but first … the "Fighter of the night "went to Joey Gambino - Joey started the fight with a huge body slam and continued his pursue to glory… The referee stopped the bout due to strikes while simultaneously his opponent was tapping due to a quick rear naked choke being applied and Joey obtained his victory by TKO. This was an extremely difficult decision. Marty Kusick, Bret Thomas and Tom Desmond all showed great fighting skill, big hearts and great sportsmanship. If there was a sportsman of the night, it would have to go to Tom Desmond. He demonstrated true professionalism and determination even through defeat. Congratulations to these Warriors!!!

Winner: Bret Thomas by unanimous decision, all 3 judges scored the bout 30-27.
This was ONE great fight! Thomas came out with some great strikes, catching Desmond within the first few seconds. Desmond was able to withstand the initial attack and came to his feet to restart the match. Unfortunately Thomas regained control and took Desmond back to the mat and attempted a rear naked choke. It looked as if the match was over, but somehow Desmond was able to escape the rear naked and obtained topside just before the end of the round.
Round 2 started by Desmond throwing a couple of leg kicks, Thomas returned with a few leg kicks of his own. Desmond set the pace with a couple of great strikes, Thomas answered with a right and downed Desmond, it looked as if the match was over. However, Desmond was able to overcome and returned to his feet once again. Thomas controlled the rest of the round and took Desmond to the mat. Desmond attempted an armbar, but Thomas was able to escape.
The last round started as Desmond demonstrated great sportsmanship by offering his hand, once the bell rang, it was all business - Desmond obviously knew he was behind in the scorecard, he began to strike and connected on some big shots. Thomas once again connected with his right and downed Desmond. Desmond again returned to his feet and was ready to battle. The fighters returned to the mat and Desmond attempted the armbar submission again, but Thomas escaped just prior to the bell. The judges returned their score; all three judges scored the bout at 30-27 for a unanimous decision for Thomas.

Popanz started his attack early with some great strikes, Anderson answered with a takedown and ended up in side control, he was able to transition to Popanz's back, but was unable to obtain the rear naked choke. As Popanz guarded against the rear naked choke he was able to reverse Anderson and then return to his feet. Anderson once again took Popanz to the mat, however Popanz was prepared and submitted Anderson with a triangle choke.
  12. AMATEUR MMA Heavyweight
Joe Mcguigan VS Frank Armstrong II
Winner: Joe Mcguigan by unanimous decision, 27-30, 27-30 and 28-30.
These Heavy weights came to fight! This was a well match bout. Both fighters came out striking then went to the ground to continued their battle. Mcguigan was warned for attempting to stomp his opponent.
The 2nd round started with these giants clinching, both trying to get the best position, Armstrong II received an unintentional knee to the groin - the referee called time and Armstrong was able to get some well deserved rest. The bout restarted and Mcguigan pushed Armstrong against the cage. Armstrong was able to secure his underhooks and put Mcguigan against the cage, both guys were working for the opportunity to initiate a takedown. Anderson pulled guard and Mcguigan threw a couple of hammerfist before the round ended.
The final round began with both throwing strikes, Mcguigan appeared to get the better strikes in, but Anderson wasn't ready to end the fight and threw a few knees that barely missed their mark. Apparently both fighters were exhausted and the tempo slowed, Anderson received a hit to the face and began to bleed from his lower lip. The bell sounded and the bout went to the judges, judge 1 scored the bout 28-30 Judge two 27-30 and judge three 27-30, a unanimous decision for Joe Mcguigan.

Mackin was able to move Baker to the cage and was able to secure side control. Mackin threw an illegal knee and received a warning from the referee. Baker attempted a submission by triangle choke, but Mackin was able to defend and ended up in mount position just prior to hearing the sound of the bell.

"Taking Lofollette By Storm"
March 28th, 2009 - Jacksboro, Tennessee, USA

  • WHO: Bad Boy's Promotions LLC
  • WHERE: Jacksboro National Guard Armory, 301 Industrial Parkway Jacksboro, Tennessee, USA
  • WHAT: ISCF Amateur MMA
  • ISCF Representative: Ron Thomas
  • ISCF Referee: Shawn Pitcock
  • ISCF Judges: Ray Thompson, Dave Stoner, and Maxine Thomas

Bad Boy Promotions and Promoter Tracy Headly hosted their first ever MMA event "Taking Lafollette by Storm" at the Staff Sergeant Barton Siler National Guard Armory in Jacksboro, Tennessee. The National Guard Armory is named in honor of SSG Barton Siler; he was killed during convoy operations 25 May 2005 while assigned to Troop A, 278th Regimental Support Squadron, 278th Armored Calvary Regiment.

The spectators cheered every warrior as if they were the hometown favorite, apparently the residents of Tennessee have wanted Mixed Martial Arts to come into their region for some time now, well Bad Boy Promotions provided the residents with exactly what they were wanting. Ring Announcer, Sean Crow, traveled from Cherokee, North Carolina and successfully encouraged the audience to get involved with the action (only verbally supporting the fighters of course!). The DJ, Alex Thomas, who previously provided DJ services to MMA events, kept the music coming for the fighters as they prepared for and entered the ring; there was also a live band from the local area that performed during intermission.

Although none of the bouts went to a decision, the bouts were fierce and full of action!! Referee Ricky Pitcock ensured that safety remained first priority; there were no major injuries in the cage! Ring Physician Jan Robbins, and his EMS crew from the Campbell County EMS: EMS Director Danny Sheckles, Paramedic Steve Smith, Paramedic Russell Lester, EMT-IV Chris Demott and EMT-IV student Summer Bratcher did a fantastic job getting all of the fighters' examinations completed prior to the event. This was the first MMA event for the majority of the fighters; therefore, Dr. Robbins and his EMS staff monitored the fighters closely just prior, during, and immediately after their bouts. The staff of the Armory, managed by Staff Sergeant Marlow ensured that the venue was properly prepared for the event. He and his lovely wife went out of their way to assist the promoter in setting up chairs, granting access to computers and printers, and allowed the use of one of the armory's storage warehouse; we really appreciated their assistance - thanks ;-)!
