    • ACTION QUESTIONED: When the bell rang to begin the fight, Jose Vasquez walked out and extended his hand to Chris Sheridan to touch gloves to start the fight. When this happened, Sheridan did touch gloves, but almost in the same motion, threw the other hand in a solid punch that KO'ed Vasquez. Although this was a clear display of "Unsportsmanlike conduct" ESPECIALLY in the Amateur ranks, the doing of it was not an illegal move. This is because as the referee instructs fighters, "Protect yourself at all times." What it does bring up though is that ALL Fighters, Amateurs and Pro should discuss whether or not they wish to touch gloves to begin their bout or not do so. This discussion of course should take place PRIOR to their bout with the referee of their bout.
      The ISCF Headquarters is waiting to see the footage of this bout because of what Sheridan did at the last Reno event. On February 7th of this year, Chris Sheridan was against Shawn McCarty of Reno, Nevada, USA. When the bell rang, Sheridan out right SPRINTED across the ring to attack his opponent. McCarty defended the initial attack but ended up losing the bout by Rear Naked Choke at 2:36 of round 1. Again, although not illegal, what is questioned here on both of these bouts is the "Sportsmanship" of the action, especially at the AMATEUR level. This latest bout is under review by the ISCF.

By ISCF Event Representative Ron Thomas: Squared Circle Promotions, Valley Fight League, promoter Lionell Royer, hosted his 16th MMA promotion, "VFL 16", at the Best Western in Winchester, Virginia. Due to the overwhelming response from the community in Winchester, Squared Circle Promotions - Valley Fight League continues to return to this area, and by the appearance of the crowd at this event … I'm sure that they will be back in the near future. The event was recorded for TV production and internet viewing. The tele-commentators from Philadelphia, PA were Promoter Ed Shu and co-commentator and MMA fighter, Kasheem Peterson. We really appreciated them taking the time to come to the show and make this an even more special event for these dedicated fighters.

As most ISCF Representative are responsible for, ISCF Representative, Jennifer Linton managed all of the logistics, weigh-ins, and the laborious job of ensuring all of the event and fighters' paperwork was in order for the event.

Ring Announcer, Henry "discombobulating" Jones, was as entertaining and professional as always, his voice demands attention and he surely kept this crowd entertained between bouts. The DJ, Alex Thomas, kept the spectators and fighters motivated with some great music; Irvin Barb brought a great audio system with him, it sounded great and the fighters never had to wait for their music to start; Thanks Alex and Irvin! Judges, Scott Pitcock, Mike Moler, and alternating judges Paul Luttrell and Gary Crim, had their hands full with this event.

The fights were extremely well matched, in the instances where a decision had to be rendered, they were extremely close in scoring. Referees, Paul Luttrell and Gary Crim kept the action moving and ensured that safety was first priority; there were no major injuries in the cage! It was apparent that these two referees have been doing this for some time - great job!

Ring Physicians, John Veltman, and the Winchester EMS crew from South End Fire and Rescue, Jeff Martin, Jamie Martin, and Jesse Downey, did a fantastic job getting all of the fighters' examinations completed prior to the event. The South End EMS examined the fighters one last time after their individual bout. Finally, the staff of the Best Western, managed by Jeff Manor, did a magnificent job getting the ballroom prepared for this event, Thanks ;-) !

Well, it's time to reveal the results of this action packed event, but first … the "Fighter of the Night" went to Umaer Haq, and the "Sportsman of the Night" went to Derek Holmes; congratulations warriors!!! What a great night of Mixed Martial Arts!!! The battle between Umaer Haq and Joe Finneran was for the Valley Fight League's Championship, which was five complete rounds of pure action; this was an incredible battle and one for the record books. There may have been bigger events in MMA this past weekend but we can confidently say that few had the big names Rico White's "The Power of Champions 2" had last night at the Warrior Training Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Along with gym owner John Wood, the special guests list on the night included several other well known MMA fighters such as Forest Griffin, Frank Mir, Sam Stout, Amir Sadolah, Matthew Brown, Mike Whithead. Also in the house were other well known names in the MMA world such as Kim Coture, well known trainers like Shawn Tompkins Even the UFC's first ring girl, Amber Nichole.

On the outside the event looked to be a short night with little action. However those in the house bared witness to 6 exciting outs, 3 Muay Thai exhibitions and loads of raffle gifts given away between the action. Add this in the the fantastic BBQ set-up outside and this was no longer an MMA event, it was a PARTY! Las Vegas Sports Anchor Bryan Salmond kept the crowd rockin as the nights MC and former MMA Fighter Joe Slick made a new name for himself as a very good and credible referee under the ISCF banner.

Although the event took place at the Warriors Training Center, this was an ICF, International Championship Fighting, www.icfights.com event! (which shares no affiliation to a group also called the International Fighting Championship events promoted and sanctioned by an unrespected individual named Paul Smith.) The ICF is owned and operated by tonights promoter, Rico White (Right). White has a long history of promoting everything from ESPN Street Basketball, Country and Rock concerts to his work in creating his MMA Promotional name.

Beat Down In Birdtown

This weekend on the Cherokee Reservation in North Carolina, USA, ISCF Promoter's Clyde Dull, Ron Smith and matchmaker Michael Allen hosted their first joint venture as fight promoters in the form of MMA promotion "BEAT DOWN IN BIRDTOWN". I myself being a fight promoter was very impressed as to the overall flow and execution of their event/show. There were lights, music with a DJ, smoke machines, a "special" walk in path for the fighters AND everything worked like clock work. The show was scheduled to start at 8:PM. and so it did!!! Ring announcer Sean Crowe started the show promptly at 8:00 and didn't stop until the final bell. What a voice this guy has!! I was especially impressed with the "behind the scenes" crew Michael had in place and to how well they kept the fighters ready and the flow of the event constant. Craig Naegler and Joe Hurst kept the fighters in line and on the go. There wasn't a single time where the fighters were not ready and the spectators had to wait on the action.

As for action there was plenty! From the first of fifteen fights to the last the audience was treated to some TOP NOTCH amateurs and a First Class Female Pro fight! There were knock downs and submissions galore. To the credit of the referee, Charles Headley and the ring physician, Dr. Clifford Malt there were only two suspensions issued. As boring as this may sound and there were NO BORING FIGHTS at this event, there wasn't a single KO. Though there were some REAL CLOSE calls no one had to suffer being put to sleep. There were plenty of cuts, scrapes, bruises, black eyes and bloody noses but nothing serious. NOW THAT'S A GREAT SHOW!!!!!

Special props need to go out to matchmaker Michael Allen on a job WELL done. He put together some great fights. EVERY fight was evenly matched and the lack of injuries was a testament to that. Though I was the appointed ISCF representative for this event, it was fellow ISCF Representative Ron Thomas from West Virginia that kept all of us on the right path. I believe there isn't a rule or procedure he is not familiar with in the ISCF. He also brought with him some great staff. Scott Pitcock, Kelly Locklear along with Ron did a super job of judging the fights and was VERY consistent in their scoring.

Ron also brought his lovely wife, Maxine and beautiful daughters, Alex and McKinley, with him. They were very instrumental in keeping the show on track. Alex was Timekeeper and McKinley was Gate Keeper. Not only are they beautiful they were great help too. A special thanks to Donna Ball who was our Assistant Timekeeper. I can't forget to thank the glue to this operation, Mrs. Andrea Swayney. According to Clyde she took on the thankless job of taking care of the paperwork as well as paying the bills. Great work Andrea!

Finally a BIG thanks must go out to the guys that risk way too much for so little return and that's the promoters Clyde and Ron. You guys provide opportunities for these young, hard working and exciting fighters that hope to become stars someday. Keep up the GREAT work and we look forward to your next show on June 6th. This was a great "first show" for these guys and they promised that the June 6th show will be even better.
